Healthy and Safe Kitchens
Notes
Harriet together with Steven Kambale went to Busene to introduce the healthy and safe kitchens program to the local leaders. This was intended for good transition from WASH to healthy and safe kitchen program in this community and to connect the HSK staff with the local leaders. The meeting begun with an open prayer that was led by one of the committee member Edith. Kibo staff Steven thanked the local leaders for their cooperation during the WASH program and asked them to continue working as a team. He told them that because they succeeded in the previous kibo program, kibo has decided to add them another program. Harriet introduced Herself and the healthy and safe kitchens program as a program which empowers the community with knowledge and skills of improving the hygiene in the entire kitchen as well as improving cooking conditions and marriage relationships .She added that the program will teach them how to build fuel efficient stoves out of the freely locally available materials, these stoves vents out smoke, use less firewood and reduce cases of fire accidents. The chairperson LC1 Paul was very excited about the program and he said that this program indeed fits his community because there is scarcity of firewood which has led rampant thefts for firewood, domestic violence resulting from children getting burnt due to open flames and delayed cooking or cooking half cooked food as a result of lack of firewood. The secretary for women’s affair Madam Edith said that her child has ever been burnt by boiling water when she was cooking on open flames and when this happened the husband just beat her thinking that she was careless. She said that basing on her experience she is welcoming the program on behalf of the community and she believes that most people will like the program. One woman asked about what the community should do before they get stoves or what to buy because she wanted to be the first one to get a stove. Harriet told them to be patient because the program has a series of lessons theoretical/ preparatory lessons before they start building stoves and all the lessons are free of charge. She told them the program requires team work and cooperation for the entire community for it to be successful. The participants asked Harriet when to meet the entire community so that they can mobilize the members to participate in the program. Harriet told them that she plans to first make home to home visit together with the local leaders as she physically invite or mobilize the community members to ease the work of mobilization and also to create good relationships with the community.
