Notes
In today’s lesson, we started the meeting with an opening prayer and thereafter there were opening remarks from the chairman representative of the village and after the chairperson Kibo group also gave her opening remarks. After this the secretary came back and took the meeting through a review of the previous lesson and also asked if anyone remembered the homework. Lorna then greeted the community and told them that today they were going to study in groups. She split the groups into 3 where we had group A,B and C. The community members looked a little tired and so Lorna decided to split the community members into different groups so as for them to interact and be active and to get everyone talk or participate. Group A discussed the signs that an Adult may be hurting a child, group B how to tell that a child has been raped and the elderly how to avoid rape situations. Group A some of the reasons were; The person acts weird around the child but Lorna asked Isabirye how? He ,mentioned that he is overly protective of the child, Juma mentioned that they always have sweets and give money to the children, talks to children about their personal problems. Here Lorna really appreciated this point where she mentioned that you find an old man talking to a 13,14 year old about his problems or marital or financial challenges. Lorna asked how can this child even help this person? . Another person mentioned touching the child inappropriately or commenting on their dress code, does not respect boundaries , a certain fear when the man comes to the home as seen in the victims eyes among others. Group B looked at signs that show that a one has been raped; Jane mentioned that one can tell by blood in their knickers or beddings. Another mentioned pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, wounds in private parts, the way the child walks, sits, crying , always alone isolated, fear of a certain person among others. Lorna added fear of removing their clothes to bathe when one is watching which is unusual, repeating old habits like bed wetting, finger sucking, fear to be left alone with the particular person, Anger, nightmares, emotional signs like; change in eating patterns, lack of self esteem, health problems like headaches, stomach cramps, change in mood or personality among others. The last group was a group of 5 old women who barely miss the Life Skills lessons. When asked on way forward they mentioned that parents should guard their children, not to trust men with their children and also that these culprits should be arrested. Lorna added on the point of not trusting men even if they were close friends, relatives that they should not trust their girl child with any man sometimes it can even be the father of the child. It was a great lesson where in the end , the secretary mentioned that when we first started teaching this topic, they did not know that it would help them , be informative like it has been. Ivan thanked Lorna for the lessons and encouraged the community members to tell others what they were learning, so they can also come.
