Notes
Together Manuela and Lorna went to Mpumiro and Bulyowa Primary Schools where they sensitized the pupils on good personal hygiene practices and values of Education. At both schools we sung the National and Busoga Anthem and thereafter the Life skills teachers introduced us once again to the pupils and thereafter Manuela started us off with Personal hygiene. Manuela asked the pupils what personal hygiene is and pupils mentioned that Personal hygiene is the general cleanliness of a persons body. After here she looked at the categories of Personal hygiene including ; Oral hygiene, Handwashing, clothes hygiene, Body hygiene among others. Manuela asked the pupils among them who had brushed their teeth and all of them put up their hands. She went ahead and asked what are some of the problems we have when we don’t brush our teeth. Some of the answers were; Tooth decay, root canals , our mouths smell, spend a lot of money going to the hospital , and then she asked them why we should brush our teeth. Among the answers were; to avoid germs, to avoid having brown teeth, to remove bacteria, to have a good breath among others. She asked a few volunteers to demonstrate how they brush their teeth and gave them tooth brushes as she guided them. On body hygiene Manuela encouraged the pupils to spend good time on their bodies especially our private parts which made the pupils laugh . She asked what were those private parts and they mentioned ; Vagina, penis, under breasts armpits. She encouraged them to shave and also trim their hair on the head as well to avoid diseases and smell. She concluded by giving them the importance of personal hygiene that is a healthy body equals a healthy mind / life, builds confidence. Lorna then taught the student Values of Education. Lorna started by asking what were the 2 forms of Education? They mentioned formal and informal education however when it came to define these two they did attempt but Lorna had to come in and redefine it well. After looking at the forms of Education, she asked them why they were in School?. Some answers were to get Knowledge, to get a bright future. Lorna asked the pupils in both schools what their School mottos were - in Mpumiro it was Education is the Key to the future while at Bulyowa it was Discipline is the key to success. Lorna used these Mottos to build on the values of Education for example she mentioned without Education, there is no bright future and without Discipline , there is no success that is if we don’t listen to our teachers, parents and do whatever they tell us to do, then there will be no success. Among the values of Education, we looked at; To gain knowledge, to learn how to read and write, to get respect from peers, fellow community members, to gain self esteem, to participate in developmental programs, to get a job, to get good money, to travel around the world, Education opens up opportunities , with Education we can avoid domestic violence, poverty among others . We also looked at importance of Education to the country and society among others.

One of the values were freedom of movement and Lorna was asking them if anyone wanted to get out of the environment of Mpumiro or some of them want to be born here, live, work and spend the rest of their lives in this village? . They chose exposure, freedom of movement . Lorna mentioned they can afford this only when they are well educated
