Notes
Harriet went to Busene village to introduce the healthy and safe kitchens program to the community. The LC1 welcomed every one to the meeting and thanked kibo for the water Sanitation and hygiene program that was implemented in their village and promised to continue working with kibo in any program brought to their village. Harriet asked the participants to introduce themselves and show the directions where they come from this was intended to create a rapport and active participation in the meeting. Interestingly all parts of the village were fully represented in the meeting though the number of men was small. Harriet told them that during the home to home visit she observed that all the participants cooked on the traditional three stones open flames and asked them to discuss the challenges they go through as they cook food for the family and these were the responses. Namukwana said that the traditional stones open flames uses a lot of firewood to cook food since very few women own forests to get fire wood from and it is the role of the women to look for firewood. This has caused firewood safety in the village. She added that the traditional open flames cook food slowly or at times due to lack of firewood it cooked half cooked food which is not good for their healthy. Edisa said that they also face challenge of fire accidents because the traditional open stones are unstable as food is being cooked water or food can easily spill over or burn women and children since women cook with their children in the kitchen. She added that once this happens it can cause fights in the home as the society and men will blame the woman for the accident with out identifying the cause of the accident. Margret said that women inhale a lot of smoke as they cook food for the family. Too much smoke cause them to sweat a lot, inhale smoke which cause them to tear and develop running noses thus being blamed by their husband for being dirty. One participants added that this has forced some men to look for other women from the trading centers thinking that their at home are dirty. Moses said that some women are naturally dirt because in some kitchens women lives ash to pile in the kitchen because the more firewood they use the more ash is being produced. This has discouraged the men to help their wives as they cook food because the kitchens are always untidy with dirty utensils scattered al over. Harriet thanked them for their contribution and told them that the healthy and safe kitchen program aims at addressing all those challenges mentioned because it empowers them with a skill of promoting general hygiene in the kitchen, create a conducive environment to attract men to work together with their wives to cook food for the family, teach them to build fuel effector their stoves that will eliminate cases of fire accidents, vent out smoke, use less fire wood as well save firewood. When Harriet mentioned that every one was excited about the program because it will address their challenges and promised to participate in the program.
