Notes
Diana went to Bulyowa, section B to teach the lesson of domestic violence. Diana got when the community had already settled ready for the lesson. She didn’t waste time and requested the chairman to chair the meeting. The Chairman mr Waiswa Patrick, opened with a word of prayer. He thanked everyone for keeping time and respecting the time of the community empowerment lessons. He said that he testifies, since he began attending the community empowerment lessons, there is a lot of change in his community. He thanked Diana and Kibo for honoring his request of taking some of the community empowerment lessons to his community. He later invited Diana to take them through the lesson. Diana thanked the community for keeping time and loving the community empowerment lessons. She asked them what they remember from the previous lesson. Patrick says that he remembers the love he should show to his wife, like helping her in house chores, digging together, Gontia said that, because of the lesson harmony and unity in marriage, he is not ashamed to walk with his wife and he encourages her also to work unlike other men who don’t want their wives to work. He sees it as a blessing to be besides her. Nabirye says that respecting her husband has promoted happiness in her family. Diana thanked everyone for their participation. She then introduced the lesson of the day which was domestic violence. She brought this lesson in this community, because she observed the disrespect in some of the women towards their husbands. They jeered at their husbands that they don’t support them. Diana told the women to be calm and present their cases in a respectful way. Diana asked them what they understand by the word domestic violence and what are some of the causes of domestic violence in their community. Mpata said that domestic violence is when husband and wife fight or disagree on certain things, Samson said that it is when women and men disagree on family issues. Diana thanked them for their contribution. Mirembe, said that it is when men refuse to support their wives and beat them up. Diana told them that domestic violence is a form of violent behavior inflicted on a person. Diana then asked them why each one of them got married, Nali Godi, said that he wanted a helper, Namuganza said that she wanted a name of being a being called ‘Mrs’ and also to have her own children, Charles said he married because he wanted someone who would take care of him and wash for him clothes, the community members laughed at him and said that he is a lazy man. Diana told them(community)that he told us his reason, therefore they should not laugh at him. Diana thanked them for their contribution, and told them marriage is about companionship, therefore it should be respected and honored. She also added on that when they are marrying, they should marry their friends and not their enemies because they will end up fighting themselves, it is from here that Gontia said that it is good for a woman to remain shabby so that no man will admire her except himself(husband), Jesca responded that the men are mean, they want them to get old while they will be going out with the other women leaving them to struggle with the children. Sarah responded it is true the men make them dig in the gardens and when the rice is ready for sale they will sell it and not give them a penny, the women in this community were really furious. Patrick responded saying that the women also, are dirty, the women kept quiet. Diana also agreed with Patrick according to her observation, that some women are dirty. Diana told them that marriage is supposed to be enjoyed and not abused like some people do,men and women should respect one another. They should treat one another as friends. This will run the home peacefully and also lead to a healthy up bringing of their children. Godfrey shouted back saying that he will not marry again, Diana asked him why, he said that, he married his wife whom he loved so much and made happy and beautiful, not knowing he was beautifying her for another man. Diana responded to Godfrey that, it is not the end of world, there are still faithful and beautiful women out there. He should not loose hope. Some of the community members encouraged him too. The discussion continued, but because it was getting late, Diana ended there, and told them to join the upper section A of Bulyowa for poultry lessons in the next visit. Diana thanked them for their time and told them to always keep time. The chairman Waiswa Patrick, could not hide his excitement for the lesson taught, he requested Diana to add them another day of this lesson, because they have a lot to discuss. Diana told him that she will see what to do for them, because indeed they still need the lesson of Domestic violence.
