Maria visited Nawandyo A upper section to teach about Malaria. Maria introduced the topic to the members, then she asked members to define Malaria, it’s causes, it’s signs and symptoms, how to prevention and treatment malaria . Sarah defined Malaria as flu and constant headaches, another member defined it as weakness in the body. Maria clarified by giving the members the true definition of malaria as; A disease caused or transmitted by an infected anopheles mosquito. The causes of malaria were discussed, community members gave several causes; headache, loss of appetite, joint pains, fever etc. Maria together with the members shared the various ways of preventing malaria, sleep under a treated mosquito net, open windows every morning and close them before 6pm, clear the bush around the home etc. The mode of spread of malaria were also discussed. The health educator encouraged members to sleep under a treated mosquito net, ensure that all the children are sleeping under a mosquito net most especially children under the age of 5 years and the pregnant women. The risk factors of malaria were discussed and the health educator shared with members what Malaria can cause or bring if not attended to; Malaria can cause a woman to miscarry, children can get convulsions, Malaria causes death in both children and women.
