Notes
Manuela and Lorna went to Ikumbya village where they were to teach on HIV/AIDS. The meeting started with an opening prayer, communications from the chairperson and thereafter was followed by kiBo Staff. During the course of the week one of the committee members called Lorna and informed her that one of the Like skills members had passed on and so Lorna begun by passing her sympathies to the community and to the bereaving family. After here we did a quick review of the previous lesson which was on Defilement. Lorna asked them what defilement was, the signs that someone can know that their daughter has been defiled, causes and consequences. It was a great overview since they remembered most of the staff. After here Lorna asked them what their homework was and Nabirye mentioned we said we were going to look at HIV/AIDS. Lorna then asked Manuela to take over. Manuela greeted the community members and went ahead and asked the community members who could tell us where HIV started from in Uganda. Different answers were given like ; Koki district, Rakai district ,Masada among others. Others mentioned that HIV came to Uganda as a result of sleeping with dogs, and that it was the American people who introduced this to the Ugandans. After one had had sex with a dog, they put a stamp on their face so that everyone would know they were infectious. There were many hilarious answers. However Manuela mentioned that she is not aware of the dog findings but she will research about it and get back to them. She mentioned however that It is true that , HIV in Uganda started from Rakai district because this area is near water, the community members in this area practiced commercial sex. She asked which year it was and some mentioned 1980, 1970’s which was all close and right. Manuela also mentioned that there was nothing much known about HIV then and people thought they were being bewitched and most of them would seek treatment and solace in witch doctors who in-turn would ask them for money. After getting infected and no treatment, the victims would go back to their different homes have intercourse with their wives and that’s how it spread and when they returned their wives would also have intercourse with others and that’s how fast HIV spread throughout the country. After here Manuela asked the community members what were some facts and myths they have heard about HIV. Ivan mentioned that before people thought when one caught HIV, they had been bewitched but this was false according to information now. One old lady mentioned that when you sit next to a person with HIV or touch them or even sleep on the same bed with them, one can easily contract HIV. Many of the community members tried to convince her otherwise but she kept murmuring that being close to an infected person, one can contract the virus. As we go on with the lessons, she will understand the different ways through which HIV/ AIDS is transmitted. Other false things were; Prostitutes are the most affected by HIV, Americans have the cure to HIV, the virus only affects white people, HIV has a cure, Virgin girls can cure HIV/AIDS which were all false. Some truths looked at were ; AIDS can kill, AIDS has no cure, AIDS is not segregative, there is treatment available for HIV but it does not cure the virus among others. After the lesson, Manuela welcomed questions whereby some asked how many times should someone get tested of HIV and the answer was after every 3 months. Another asked how is it possible that sometimes you find a couple but one is positive and the other is negative and Manuela mentioned we were going to look at that under Transmission but also that HIV virus can hide and not be easily detected that’s is why it’s advised to test those number of times.
