Notes
Tom and Steven made a visit to Magada to check on the water pump station in that place. This was based on a suggestion by the water officer. When Tom, the water officer and Steven reached the village, they were welcomed by the chairman of the village and the chairman of the water pump management committee. Tom asked the chairman a few question such as how did they change the mindset of people from the hand pump to a water system paid for. Mr Saafi said this was not a big issue because once residents saw that the water was closer to them and convenient, they quickly accepted and adopted. On the issue of managing breakdowns, he said the district together with the village committee manage the system. The committee reports any issues to the district who then bring the appropriate parts and fix the system. Tom and Steven saw a security house for the security guard who guards the system. The water officer said it was important because its good to provide the security for the system. When asked who pays the security guard, Mr Saafi said the village raises the funds to pay for the guard and he said the guard is paid 30,000 a month. The guard is a local resident as well. The water officer said there are four water collection locations that residents collect water from. The water officer said they system has 12 solar panels, a powerful battery and the pump station which had all the systems necessary to power and water system. Tom, Steven and the Water Officer left before the other team had arrived because they were running late.
