Notes
Today’s visit was different as Lorna went to Mpumiro Primary School as well as Mpumiro the community. At the school Lorna went straight to the Headteachers office where she signed into the visitors book before heading to the Life Skills class. At the Life Skills class, Lorna noticed that some students were absent and when she asked how come, they mentioned some students had been sent home for school fees, And for corn / posho. The books and pens were distributed and thereafter we were able to start our lesson. Lorna mentioned that we were going to look at values of Education in detail since last time we were not writing down but just discussing. Lorna asked what is a Education ? And Timothy mentioned that it is the process of acquiring Skills and knowledge. Lorna mentioned that was correct. Lorna then asked what were the different types of Education?, and Micheal mentioned Formal and informal education and we were able to define what formal and informal education was. After this we looked at the values of education to a person among which were; building confidence, gaining knowledge of things that one did not know, it helps to conserve the environment, when one is educated, they can get great jobs, create jobs for others, when one is educated, they know the importance of voting, education eradicates poverty among others. We then looked at the reasons our parents should be involved in our education where we had answers like; it helps one be confident in their education, it improves the students grades when their parents are involved, it helps avoid bad peer groups, gives teachers moral to do their work. Lastly we looked at values of Education to our community , society and country. Among the answers were; It leads to employment opportunities, one knows why they should pay tax, it leads to creation of jobs hence eradicating poverty. Education helps one to identify need and find solutions for that need. After this Lorna asked the students what we had learnt about which they mentioned and told them the next lesson was going to be Bridge model. She then asked everyone that gave an answer in class to stand up and asked the rest to appreciate them. After the lesson at school, Lorna went to the community of Mpumiro. At Mpumiro village Lorna met a few people already waiting and we waited a little while for more community members to join us. However since it’s a rainny season this community grows a lot of groundnuts and so most people were still in their gardens. As we waited however, there were 2 youths at a nearby home and they had planned to come to the meeting and disrupt the meeting . They had questions about every kibo program in this village that is WASH about the borehole, stoves, life skills . Lorna heard all these questions and wrote them down which she would later mention in the meeting. It was also threatening to rain and so we decided to start the meeting which started with a word of prayer, remarks from the chairman who later invited Lorna to teach . Lorna mentioned that we were not going to learn a new topic today but remind ourselves of the previous topic since this was the first time to meet since the year begun. Lorna asked the community members who can remind her of the previous lessons. Tumuhaise mentioned Bride price, Aziz mentioned communication skills, Tiffu mentioned Relationship Skills which was all correct and Lorna mentioned they forgot one Role models. Lorna asked what about these topics and we were able to discuss what transpired in these lessons. For example under role model we had Musa tell us his story and who his role model is and how he has even gone beyond his role model. He encouraged community members that instead of being jealous of each other to admire and learn from those above them. Challenge/ rumors As we were about to talk about the concerns of the 2 youth Farouk and Nuraine, it started to rain and most people dispersed but those that remained, Lorna mentioned to them that she heard a few rumors and wanted to set them straight among which were; what is Kibo in full, Why does Kibo have to come to this village every other week don’t they have other villages to go to, why did they come with the police for the borehole commissioning, why disturb us with stoves those who don’t have stoves are they dead. These were some of the questions they asked and these two youth had promised to disorganize the meeting but Lorna and her driver managed to beat them to it. The youth were shocked at how we got everything they were saying and yet we weren’t even near them. Together with the chairman we managed to answer their questions as much as we could and invited them to always attend these meetings because if they were attending, they wouldn’t have these questions.
