Notes
Harriet went to Busene village to teach about smearing and teach the materials required for building stoves. The lesson begun with a review of the previous lesson to find out whether they still recalled what was taught before. Interestingly the community recalled every thing which was so encouraging. Harriet asked them to discuss the materials required for smearing. The community listed the following :ash, sand, cow dung, water . She went a head and told the community that it’s important to smear their home facilities because smearing helps their homes to look neat and last longer. She asked the community if there was any one who had smeared his home facilities and only five people had smeared their home facilities. Harriet asked the rest why they had not smeared their home facilities and they did not have a clear answer. One participants called Sarah Kaswabuli said that for sure it is important to smear their home facilities because smearing reduces on dust that Harbor insects like flea and jiggers that cause diseases. She added that untidy kitchens also discourage the men to help their wives as they cook food .She committed her self to lead smearing exercise in the village . She also requested the community to be cooperative with her so that they improve the hygiene standards in their village. One man “ Eddy” asked that , some people’s kitchen were built using bricks which they plan to plaster later therefore can they build stoves in them as they wait on them being plastered. Mutesi said that to avoid some participants being left behind as far as smearing is concerned she advised them that, meanwhile to smear their home facilities as they look for money to buy cement for plastering since smearing is done using freely available materials. Harriet asked them to identify a home where a demonstration exercise will be conducted in the next meeting. The community said that they don’t need a demonstration but they will smear their home facilities since they know but have been reluctant. She then told the materials required for building stoves like termite dirt, grass, water, banana stems,a panga, a shovel, hoes, basins etc and everyone was tasked to bring a heap of grass to the meeting to see how committed they are.
