Notes
Tom’s plan was to visit Kisimu with the district water officer to assess the area around the lower borehole to assess the feasibility of the water pump system as well as check on sanitation improvements. Tom waited at the district on the request of the water officer who was attending a meeting. After a while Tom realized the meeting would not end soon so Tom left for Kisimu. While in Kisimu, Tom observed the improvements made through the construction of facilities like latrines, dish racks, showers etc. Tom in many homes he visited, he saw most homes with hand washing stands and most with jericans on. In one home Tom witnessed as a boy left the latrine, he walked to the jerican and washed his hands. This was encouraging. Even in the trading center, residents are eager to construct the stands. The wife to the chairman said many people are now willingly asking for the cement and paying for it in order to construct the hand washing stands and once construction, she said most of them are happy with the new technology of hand washing and many now prefer the stand to vet the tippy tap. Generally sanitation has improved and on schedule for the third evaluation by the end of March
