Notes
Lorna went to Naibowa to teach on Early Pregnancies. It took some good time before the community members cane to the meeting even after Wakiso remobilized them before the lesson. He reported that most community members are busy in their gardens and requested that those that came, we should go ahead and begin the lesson. At about 2pm we started the lesson since time was far spent and Wakiso started us off with a word of prayer whereafter , we went into the review of the previous topic goal setting. Together we looked at different examples of short and long term goals. Wilber appreciated these lessons and wished that every thing being taught in these lessons are practiced. After the review , Lorna was invited to teach the community members. She started by greeting the community members thereafter , she asked them to remind her of their homework and Nabirye mentioned early pregnancy which was correct. Lorna added that early pregnancy is a big challenge/ problem affecting our children both boys and girls, community and country at large. Lorna mentioned that according to some sources, in 2020 alone we had over 3000 early pregnancy cases reported and in the first quarter of 2021 we had over 1000 cases reported leaving alone those that were not reported. She then asked the community members what were the causes of early pregnancy among girls and boys. Some of the causes mentioned were; poverty, absentee parents, divorced parents, lack of basic requirements like knickers, pads, bad peer groups / peer pressure, bribery of cases , Lorna added Overly strict parents / tough parents who make it hard for the children to approach them Incase of any challenge among others. Isa raised up his hand and mentioned the biggest people to blame concerning this problem is the month era/ women when asked why he mentioned that they can know that their daughters are pregnant and keep quiet about it and go ahead and tell their children to keep quiet about it that if their fathers found out they would be in trouble. He added they are the same people who send their children to their boyfriends and what happens in between is their children get to be the victims either of rape or defilement hence early pregnancy. He said blame the women. Lorna mentioned that in order to avoid this, both parents need to work hand in hand concerning overcoming this challenge. Nabirye shared with us a story of how she almost lost her daughter because she was very strict and hard on her and kept threatening her that she should never get pregnant so when she got pregnant , she ran away from home but it took different interventions to have her come back home. She mentioned that whatever we are teaching about is exactly what happens in this community. She encouraged parents to work together and create friendship and speak the same language when it comes to raising their children. We looked at some consequences of early pregnancy to the mother of the baby like ; it Leads to early marriages, it leads to premature birth, maternal mortality, poverty, school dropout, parental neglect, spousal neglect , HIV/ AIDS. We also looked at the consequences to the father of the baby like; imprisonment, school dropout, poverty, HIV/AIDS among others . Because time was far spent, we mentioned that we will continue with this lesson in the next meeting where we will look at consequences of early pregnancy to the baby and the community and country at large.
