Notes
Purpose of the visit in Kagulu village, Manuela went to this village to teach about women and HIV, this lesson is intended to educate participants that their are some factors that make women to be at a higher risk than men in catching HIV virus. The meeting started with a prayer led by Monica, later on a ward from the chairman, who thanked the participants for coming and the Kibo staff for teach good and encouraging lessons. Manuela started her lesson by reviewing the previous lesson, then introduced the lessons of the day, women and HIV. Manuela asked participants to think why they say, women and HIV not men and HIV? Reactions from the participants, they sighted answers like because women are the ones looking for the virus unlike men, because women love money, because women are prostitutes, then one woman said it’s because women can not decide for them selves, she went on and said that looking at a village women even today, women don’t have chance to decide for themselves when it comes to sexual and reproductive hence that is why they say women and HIV. Manuela requested for the fellow participants to clap hands for her. Manuela appreciated the participants for trying to share their ideas, Manuela further discussed the reason why they say women and HIV. Manuela explained to the participants that there are certain behavior in our community that puts women at higher risk of catching HIV virus for example Manuela said that there are possible risks factors like women receiving greater qualities of possible infections during sexual encounter, women have a surface area of mucous membrane as portal of entry that is greater in size than men, being young and your forced to get married, women being circumcised or use natural substance to dry up their private parts. All that practice can put women at higher risk of catching the virus. After that explanation, Manuela told the participants that, mother to child transmission meaning mothers have higher risk of passing the HIV to their children mistily during birth, during pregnancy and when breast feeding the infants if the mothers are not taken to the hospital to be guided by the medical personal. Manuela also explained the possible culture or social risk factors, Manuela explained that taboo to speaking about sex, gender roles that do not permit women to participate in sexual and reproductive decisions etc. Manuela asked the participants do such things happen? They said yes, then Manuela asked them what are they going to do with those possible risk, they kept quiet for some time then one woman said women should be given chances to decide when it comes to sex etc. After explaining all that, Manuela asked the participants that what they think about today’s lesson, they said it was good only that they need to avoid practicing that can put women at risk for catching the HIV. Then she gave them the homework to search about HIV and Behavior Change.
