Notes
Purpose of the visit, Manuela and Alex W went to Bulyowa primary school, Manuela went to teach while Alex went to supervise Life Skills program in that schools. But fortunately he also got a chance and talked to the students mostly the boys about Menstruation. Manuela started her class by reviewing the previous lessons and discussed about the previous home work given. Students were able to share their ideas about their homework . Manuela asked the students to tell her what they think about Menstrual period, felling shy, no response, Manuela encouraged the students to try in their local language then one girl by the name Vivian, said that it means falling sick every month, then one boy called Sam, said that it means seeing the moon. Manuela asked them is that true they shouted yes. Manuela told the students menstruation is not sickness, it’s normal and every girl of Adolescent age and mothers are experiencing it , it start from 12;13;14;15 to up wards, but it depends on oneself body systems. Manuela further explained to the students what Menstruation is and the important of Menstruation Hygiene and Management, Manuela advised the girls to try and be clean during that time to avoid other related infections to their life, she told them to have enough materials to use and wash them properly with soap and water and dry them under sunshine or iron them. She encouraged them to use what their parents give them to use other than demanding for what they their parents can not afford or remaining at home it’s not good, Manuela encouraged the girls to continue coming to school while in their periods, because it’s not a disease or a curse . Manuela asked the students, what do they use during their periods? They kept quiet meaning they are struggling a lot during that time . Manuela presented the different types of sanitary pads that she brought for students demonstration. Manuela explained to the students the functions of all the pads and requested the students to come in front and demonstrate, at first it was not easy they tried but failed to fold the piece of sanitary towel till Manuela had to show them the rightful way of folding, then Manuela asked the students again to try, this time round it was easier because Manuela showed them. After that, Manuela explained to the students the pre menstrual signs and symptoms, later on Manuela talked about the cramps and how they can manage those cramps so that they can stay in school other than home. After demonstration of the sanitary towels, Manuela invited Alex to talk to the boys about Mensuration period. Alex started by asking the boys that who among them have got sisters, almost all the boys raised up their hands, He told them that Menstruation period is normal and every female experience that, so it’s something not to laugh at or even gossip about, Alex encouraged the boys to be of grate help to their sisters or the girls at school in case the girl’s dress is stain. After Alex’s explanation, Manuela appreciated the students for being attentive and trying to participate, Manuela encouraged students to always try to give answers in English because their test is going to be done in English, she gave them homework on the factors affecting young people in their community. After that Manuela went to the community to teach the participants about the bride price . It was a debate between opposes and proposes about bride price but this lesson was referring to parents not to marry of their young girls just because of the cattle and money. Manuela advised the parents to educate their girls to finish their studies get jobs then marry men of their choice other than planing to marry them off while still young . The debate went on well most of the participants supported that men should pay the bride price so that their women can gain host and respect in their homes. Challenges. It’s not easy to teach at school and in the community on the same day. But Manuela is trying simply because she is at the phasing point in this village, otherwise it’s not easy, I feel in the community I am not performing well hence half-baked information to the participants.
