Notes
Lorna went to Ikumbya village where she went to teach on the Immune system. This lesson is aimed at raising awareness on how we need to keep out immunity strong and to know the various functions of the immune system and it’s components. The meeting was opened with a word of prayer and thereafter we went through a review of the previous lesson which was introduction of HIV /AIDS Awareness. We reminded ourselves of certain facts and myths concerning HIV/AIDS which went on well. After this we looked at the lesson for the day the immune system. Lorna asked the community members if anyone would explain to us what the immune system was. The chairman mentioned that it is the way our body fights off diseases in other words the bodies mechanism of fighting off diseases. Lorna asked the community members to clap for him. Lorna built on from there and mentioned many times we get sick and we have what we call the immune system which helps us fight off diseases. Lorna mentioned the immune system is composed of two cells that is the white blood cells and red blood cells. Lorna asked if anyone can tell us the function of these two cells and there was silence until Ivan asked to try. He mentioned that white blood cells help Carry oxygen while red blood cells carry blood throughout the body. Lorna thanked him for trying and when there was no one else to try, Lorna mentioned that red blood cells carry in oxygen in our bodies and out carbon dioxide while white blood cells composed of other cells help us fight diseases. Lorna then asked how can we keep our immunity strong? , the answers were by eating a balanced diet which is not beef only or milk only but proteins, vitamins, carbohydrates, etc. Another mentioned fruits, vegetables and Lorna added plenty of exercise, rest, get rid of stress among others. After this Lorna distributed illustrations of the immune system to the community members and gave them 5 minutes to study and then tell the group what they see or understand. Ivan tried to explain by saying he sees something swallowing germs and he was close. Lorna explained each function of the white blood cells including; the T4 cell, T8 cell, factory like cells and their functions and thereafter we acted out a play showing us how other diseases , viruses including HIV attack the immune system. Lorna asked for 11 volunteers who were the body, the white blood cells and the other volunteers were the different diseases. This game is called the Elephant and Lion game. In the Game we see one one volunteer standing in the middle and 6 others surrounding the body who represent the white blood cells and the other 5 who are various diseases. On the word “go” Lorna told the diseases to attack the body as the white blood cells fight them off but allowing a few touches. Lorna pauses there and mentioned even though we have the white blood cells fighting off diseases, the body still gets sick but doesn’t dies because the cells are fighting. We then looked at HIV and the immune system where HIV dominates the CD4 cell and multiplies itself in the body killing the other cells leaving the body / immune system prone to infections. After this, Lorna asked the other diseases to attack again and this time it was easy to reach the body. It was an interesting play. Lorna then asked the participants what killed the body?. One person mentioned the diseases which was right. It is the diseases that killed the person and not HIV. The chairman at the end of the meeting added that it’s therefore our responsibility to help the immune system fight off these diseases especially for PLWHIV to always treat infections, sicknesses early. To eat well and take our medicines well. Next week we will be looking at HIV transmission and prevention.
