Maria went to Nawandyo A lower section teach about upper respiratory tract infection and alcohol & drug abuse. The meeting began by defining upper respiratory tract infection,how it is transmitted, prevented, and treated.
Members gave several definitions; Loy said it is headache, flue,and cough. After the many definitions from members, Maria gave a clear definition saying it is mostly a viral infection that attacks the throat, nose and airways.
She said that it is commonly transmitted through air, nose with an infected hands.
Members discussed how to prevent URTI together with the staff; wash hands with soap and water to kill the germs, put on masks when you have cough etc.
Maria encouraged Members to go to hospital for proper diagnosis and treatment.
Further still alcohol and drug abuse were also discussed by both the staff and the members, identifying what causes people to take alcohol, how to prevent alcoholism in the community and at individual level.
Mukama a man who used to take alcohol shared how it started; a friend of Mukama invited him one evening to share a meal after he brought alcohol and told him to just take small amount to pass time, Mukama enjoyed for first time but after that he could not sleep with out alcohol, group influence in both adults and youths have become a great cause, boredom, stress etc.
Maria discussed the outcomes of drug abuse together with the community members mentioning Braine damage, kidney disease, death among others which affects an individual.
Saida said that on this village most boys end in primary and start using drugs thereafter they are wasted, some end up in prison because they do not work yet they need money to buy alcohol and drugs.
Maria encouraged the VHT to be preparing health talks so that people are sensitized about their health, parent to share the knowledge given to them by the health educator with their children, make the teenagers busy in activities like football, net ball, brick laying , encourage children to go to school etc.
