Notes
Tape and Suzan went to the village to teach the community members how to build the fuel efficient stove. This was going to be the first demonstration stove to be constructed at the upper section (group A) of the village. When they arrived, they found all the participants gathered at the meeting place and together they walked to one of the members home named Alice whom they selected first to receive the first fuel efficient stove. This was because she had most requirements needed by the healthy and safe kitchens program. Kibo staff worked together with the community by collecting the dirt from the anthill while carrying it to the kitchen compound. Tape and Suzan began mixing the dirt and grass at a ratio of 2:1 while explaining to the community until it totaled 12 basins of dirt mixed with 8 basins of grass. They spread the dirt and sprinkled water all over it but as soon as they began stamping it, than it began drizzling. Kibo staff suggested they cover it with a large plastic paper bag and wait for the rains to stop while they wait aside. A few minutes later after the rains stopped, they went back and continued to stamp the dirt together while singing until it got ready. It was carried inside the kitchen and Kibo staff began building the stove step by step while explaining each step to the community members. A few group members of about Six people were requested by Kibo staff to be entering the kitchen since it was small and couldn’t accommodate all the group members. During the whole process, the participants kept on asking questions concerning the stove building while Kibo answered them. At the end, Kibo staff requested the Alice to keep twisting the saucepans everyday so as not to let the saucepans get stuck in one place. They also explained to the members that the stems can be taken out after one week of building it and to begin cooking on it once it turns one month old. The community members were so happy for the lessons taught that day and promised to improve on all their facilities before receiving the stoves.
