Notes
Tom, Jeff and Alex went to the village of kalitumba to check on the program of sanitation and hygiene as well as seeing what kibo is doing in the village towards encouraging the village through hygiene and sanitation. When they reached the village, they found when the vhts were still in their gardens so, they decided to go to the chairman’s home and wait for them there. When the chairman came, they greeted and after a short while, they suggested that they go to one of the vhts home and start moving around. They found her ready as well as other committee members who joined them in the moving around in the village. Later other vhts also joined them. In the first home they visited, the resident had just finished his 20ft pit for his latrine. The visitors were very surprised to see the depth of the pit and like wise his neighbor had done the same. Tom and the committee members encouraged the residents about constructing the latrines using better methods like first mixing the dirt for the floor of the latrine and using better and stronger poles. One of the pits is for a widow who said even though she has not finished constructing her house, she has decided to first finish the latrine because she has seen the purpose and value. Tom and the committee members thanked her for making that decision. Later they visited a home of a resident who has finished his latrine. It’s a well constructed latrine with bricks and cement with a depth of 25ft. Later they visited other homes where more pits are being dug and in one home, they found when the resident was in the pit digging. The visitors encouraged him and thanked him for the work he was doing to improve on the sanitation and hygiene of his home. In some homes, there were challenges as to why they were not digging and constructing lartrines. One resident shared with the group and said that his father had not yet given him an area to construct a latrine on the property/land while in other homes, they said their father had refused them to construct a latrine on his property/land even through they are married with families. Tom and the committee members shared about the challenges and the chairman said he will meet with all the men refusing to give there sons land to construct on there latrines. After several homes, they were able to come back to the meeting place and Tom and the visitors left for jinja. In total they were able to see 7 new pits already done.
