Notes
Mpumiro Primary School At the school, Lorna went straight to the head teachers office where she signed into the arrival book whereafter she went to the Life Skills class. Again Lorna found when the students were out in the field practicing for their upcoming sports day. When they students saw the car, they ran to the Life Skills class. In the class we did a review of the previous lesson about the Bridge model. Lorna called in 2 volunteers to come to the front of the class and teach their fellow students what they understood from the bridge model. Brenda manage to explain however Mary failed to explain well which was okay and because of this Lorna decided to build on Brendas explanation of the bridge model and asked the class to clap for her. After the review, we looked at the lesson of the day which was on Decision making. We started by defining what Decision making is. Where we said it is the process of deciding what is right from what is wrong. We also saw that it is a process of choosing from many options/ choices. We then looked at some examples of bad decisions where the students gave examples like; having sex while still young, drinking alcohol, joining bad peer groups, not attending lessons at school, stealing among others. We also looked at good decisions like; Abstaining from sex, staying in school, listening to elders, saying no to bad peer groups, among others. After these examples We then looked at steps in making decisions. Lorna mentioned to the students that everyday we make decisions or walk in decision making and how we make those decisions matter. She mentioned that we have easy rescissions and challenging decisions however we eventually have to make those decisions and the outcome is our responsibility. Lorna mentioned several examples of decision making and after we looked at the steps among which were; Prayer which is a very important tool when it comes to decision making, thinking about the problem/ decision at hand, seeking advice , listening to the advice given, considering family and personal values, considering cultural values, considering the impact of that decision on other people, choosing from a list of options, making the decision and lastly embracing the consequences of that decision made. Lorna mentioned that it is very important to think through these steps before going a head to make a decision that may affect ones life. Lorna co taught this lesson with teacher Mairuba and Kulire and it was amazing to see these two teachers teach. Mpumiro village After the school , Lorna went to the community and while here, We continued with out lesson on goal setting. We reminded our selves what a goal is and the need for one to have a goal. For example setting goals helps us to know our strengths and weaknesses, goals push us out of our comfort zones. Lorna mentioned that’s it is important for everyone to have a goal in their lives and mentioned that to set a goal means there something’s we may need to do a way with for example too much sleep, . We looked at different examples of short and long term goals for example health being a goal, where Lorna mentioned that if it is ones goal to reduce hospital visits and reduce the money they spend to these hospital visits, then there certain things they are going to need to do away with, to achieve this goal. We looked at saving as a goal in order to build a house where one needs to avoid being an impulse buyer, get an accountability partner to keep them in check when it comes to spending their money. Also they can join Saving groups or ask someone to keep for them their money as it accumulates to be able to achieve that particular goal. We then got 2 volunteers to tell us what their goals are. Musa mentioned that his goal was to buy a cow and so Lorna asked the community members to pay attention and learn because she was going to ask some questions. Lorna asked Musa how he intended to achieve that goal and he said that he was going to plant rice and by the end of the year hopefully he can buy a cow. Lorna asked him what will he achieve when he attains that goal. He mentioned he will get milk which he will send to supplement on the children’s fees. Lorna asked him what challenges does he think he will face, he mentioned the harvest may be less, the weather, finances , discouragement among others. Lorna mentioned indeed their challenges along the way but we need not give up on our goals. Nabakyala also shared that her goal was to become a chairman when Lorna asked why , she said she wanted change and was tired of only men being the chairmen. Lorna asked here what she was doing now to see to it that she achieves this goal. She mentioned she is going to meetings, attending funerals, helping the women in the village among others. Over ole it was a great lesson and the community members were geared up to make their own goals. We had 24 people in total 5 men and 19 women.
