Notes
Maria visited Bukudumira village upper section to teach about breastfeeding and complementary feeding, to discuss its benefits to babies, mother, father and the community and demonstrate breast attachment. Members together with the health educator discussed a number of benefits; it helps the baby to grow healthier said Nandego, it is the best food for babies Kagoya said, after the health educator added and said it prevents breast cancer, breast milk contains the best nutrients a baby needs etc. Salumaya shared some of the challenges mothers face while breast feeding their babies; some women don’t have breast milk, others get rashes around the nipples causing women unable to feed in pain among others. Maria advised breastfeeding mothers to change or improve on the diet to solve the issues of lacking breast milk, mothers to improve on their personal hygiene, changing of their bra, clean or wipe the breast before feeding the baby. When community members were asked about the stage to start giving food supplements, they said that at the age of 3 months, 5 months, at 8months “members said”. Maria clarified and said additional food starts at 6 months, beginning with soft foods like porridge, smashed potatoes, soup, juice. Members appreciated the knowledge that Kibo has extended to them.
