Notes
Alex W and Martin Kibuka met with Bukooma people to discuss about hand washing and why it’s very important to practice hand washing at all times. Due to the ongoing rain season, about 41 people turned up for this hand washing triggering session. The community were told that Kibo group’s intention back in the village was to complete a sanitation cycle with them. The community members were asked to mention those critical times that need hand washing, Joyce mentioned that after visiting the pit latrine, after digging , Waiswa said before eating. However the community agreed that no one washes his/her hands before greeting someone. People touch so many things and will use their hands for greeting each other since it’s a norm in our society. First the community members were asked who were sure they had clean hands, two women put up their hands and one man testified that he had dirty hands. When the two women, Katono and Jennifer washed their hands without soap, the water looked quite clean as compared to the man whose hands were dirty. When all washed their hands with soap, the two women’s still shown that they were dirty and the water indeed looked very dirty. The community members surely witnessed that washing hands with soap or ash was such an important thing to do because of the difference with the water that was they washed. A committee of five people was then selected to lead the program. The community members loved the new idea of the hand washing stand that was demonstrated and immediately six people paid for their cement to construct hand washing stands in their homes. Each home in the village will receive a free hand washing jerrycan from Kibo group after constructing a hand washing stand.
