Notes
At School, Lorna found the students already in class and teacher Kulire was reviewing the previous lesson with them. This was really neat to see. After the review, Lorna asked the students to remind her what the homework was and they mentioned role model. Lorna started by asking the students who is a role model?. The students barely responded and Lorna asked them whether it’s a new word majority said yes. Lorna then asked teacher Kulire to explain to the class. Teacher Kulire mentioned that a role model is someone who is exemplary. Lorna thanked teacher Kulire and added that a role model is someone we admire and aspire, work hard to be like. We went ahead and looked at where we find our role models and where we don’t find them. Examples given were ; Schools, worship places, public places, hospitals, our communities , among others. We also looked at where we don’t find them like in shrines, bars, lodging places, discos among others. Lorna mentioned that a drunkard cannot be ones role model because they don’t command respect, they pick fights and are aggressive and they never develop. Lorna mentioned that sometimes you find that a young person admires a drunkard because they can drink a whole crate of beer and so they also want to be like them. Lorna mentioned that that is wrong. We also mentioned that a witch doctor cannot be a role model why is because instead of helping people, they rob them of their possessions. Also because where there are witch doctors there is no development. We then looked at some qualities of a good role model like; honest, God fearing,Knowledgeable , reliable, helps others , trustworthy, faithful, respects themselves and others, hard worker, exemplary among others. Also we looked at non qualities of a role model like; a drunkard, lazy person, corrupt person , among others. Lorna asked the students who their role models were; one mentioned President Museveni, the fallen Speaker of parliament , their mothers others fathers among others. Community In the community we reviewed the previous lesson on goal setting and thereafter , Lorna mentioned the topic of today causes , consequences of early pregnancy. We divided ourselves into 3 groups and each group had a question to discuss and later share their outcomes with the larger group. The groups were A,B and C and each group got 2 questions each and these were ; I) causes of early pregnancy Ii) consequences of early pregnancy to the boy or girl / young mother/ father. Iii) consequences to the parents of the 2 young parents, iv) consequences of early pregnancy to the community, v) consequences to the baby ,vi) solutions. Among the causes were; peer pressure, poverty , rape, defilement , parental neglect, child headed families. Challenges of the boy and girls were ; school dropout, Poverty, Stigma from community, spousal neglect for girl child, imprisonment for the boy child, HIV/AIDS. Challenges of the baby mentioned were; risk being born a anemic, premature, lack of basic needs, among others. Consequences for the parents mentioned were; both parents get to care for both their children and their babies needs, for example when they are sick, feeding , clothings, enmity between families among others. The community suffers lack of development, unskilled labor, high rate of school dropout. Group C struggled with their question and we mentioned that we would start with group C in the next meeting. Lorna mentioned that teaching this topic does not mean that Mpumiro village is registering large numbers of early pregnancies but prevention is better than cure. Group A won for best presentation and Lorna gave them a prize.
