- Notes
- Manuela and Lorna went to Ikumbya to teach on HIV prevention. This lesson is taught so that the community members know how to protect themselves, their family from getting infected with HIV/ AIDS. On our way to the village however we were informed that they had lost a community member previously and this some people were still mourning and that it would affect our attendance however we decided to go. Also previously Ivan mentioned to us that there was a couple that was struggling with HIV/AIDS and stigma and asked if Manuela and Lorna can visit them to counsel them. Therefore instead of holding the meeting, we decided to visit this home and find out how they were fairing and how we could advice or be of help. The findings would also help us teach or sensitise the village on the next lesson. We asked Ivan wether it would be okay for us to visit this home and he said yes there was no problem.
When Manuela and Lorna reached that home, we greeted them and requested to talk to them, they allowed us but on one condition because they have seen our camera , but they told us not to take their photos, we agreed, we asked the couple how they are and how they feeling, they responded not good, Manuela talked to the man while Lorna the woman. The man mentioned to Manuela that they lived many years before realizing that they were both positive. When they decided to test, his wife accused him of being promiscuous but after a series of counseling they reconciled and started getting treatment together which was good. However he mentioned that because of stigma from the community they get their medicine from a different health centre . Manuela counseled him and mentioned that it was not a death sentence and advised on how to continue doing the activities they were doing before, not be stressed about anything, eat well, rest well and pray. Lorna also while talking to the lady Mariam she mentioned that life has not been easy but she keeps trusting in God. She mentioned the distance to the health centre is far but they have to go, no transport, people pointing fingers , stigmatized against. Lorna counseled her and told her to be strong love herself, her husband and continue seeking treatment. About the distance she mentioned that they can get enough treatment to cover them for a certain period so they don’t have to worry about distance. Manuela and Lorna then brought them back together and asked the the couple how they feel, they said better and they encouraged them to start coming for life skills lesson.
