Notes
It’s a rainy season and therefore when we got to the village literally it had stopped some minutes ago and people were in their gardens. Walked around to remind the community members to come to the meeting before sitting at the meeting place. When the meeting started, the chairperson mentioned they did a good job mobilizing and today we were going to have a lot of people but it’s because of the weather that some of the community members were still in their gardens and because of the weather they can barely tell the time. The meeting started at about 2pm where we started with a word of prayer and then opening remarks from the chairman which was followed by a review from the previous lesson/ meeting. After the preview which went well, we looked at the topic of the day which was Alcohol and drug abuse; the reasons people drink and the consequences. Today’s meeting was interesting as we heard most of it taken on by those who drink alcohol. Lorna started by asking If there were bars in Naibowa and they mentioned yes. She went on and asked in the meeting that how many of us take Alcohol? , those who did raised up their hands. Lorna then asked them in this villages is it mostly the old people that drink alcohol or the young?. They mentioned the young and we looked at some of the drinks they drink like ; Askari, London, rock boom, kombucha and Lorna asked which one was Askari ?, Mwase moved out of the meeting and brought Lorna an empty bottle of Askari leaving everyone laughing. He mentioned at his home there is a hole which is a dumping site for these bottles. After this we looked at why is it young people are taking more alcohol than the old people. Mwase mentioned young people have no jobs and so they take it to feel some sense of comfort while old people used to drink together and plan their lives , handle issues in the village which is not the case today. Another answer was young people these days want to show off you find someone going to the bar with a lot of money and when they come out they have no balance. Another one said there is too much bars, media content, peer pressure that makes them drink. We looked at reasons for drinking alcohol and consequences like; boredom, running away from problems at home, peer pressure, pass time, gain confidence, escape from reality , doctors prescription . Isaac mentioned that’s for him he does not drink but used “weed” and that when he does so , he can dig up to 3 acres of land. Here Lorna interrupted and mentioned even without the weed he can do that and that’s just because it’s psychological and other community members agreed that sometimes we get our bodies used to something which is not the case and our bodies can do without. We looked at the consequences like; domestic violence , failure to fulfill ones roles and responsibilities in a home, leads to loss of respect, some don’t bathe, brings about unhappy children which can decrease on their performance, liver damage, leads to theft, poverty where someone sells all they have just to drink alcohol. Isaac mentioned that we need to categorize these drinkers because as him he drinks and ensures he fulfills his responsibility unlike others who don’t. He said when he goes to drink he ensures there’s everything needed at home. Mwase said one can drink but not become a nuisance bringing shame to themselves and their families. Lorna concluded by mentioning that we should not be slaves to Alcohol but advised that they can quit if possible but if not to drink responsibilities because we have seen abuse of alcohol and drugs leading to death, imprisonment. To avoid bad peer groups, and also find other hobbies , drink once in a while not that it’s a necessity.
