Notes
Harriet and Jeska discussed the goals and objectives of the healthy and safe kitchen program. The lesson was community centered whereby they first asked the community to identify the challenges they go through as they cook on open flames. The participants mentioned challenges like too much smoke which makes their eyes to tear, sweet a lot, develop running nose, fire accidents as they cooked on the traditional three stones fire which are un stable, chest and eyes problems due to too much smoke inhaled in the kitchen as they cook food, lot of fire wood is required to cook food yet very few people own forests where to get firewood on daily basis and this has caused some women to steal firewood from the neighbors thus being charged of theft. One participant Called Namukose said that due to lack of firewood at times women serve half cooked food to their husbands who ends up battering them. Naigaga Ida said that because of the uncomfortable environment in the kitchen and too much work done by women which limits them with time to bath before cooking or even to put on clean clothes before cooking that has made some men to think that their wives are dirty and end up on either abusing them or abandon them . Mr. Mulega Christopher said that some women are naturally dirty for example they leave scattered dirty plates in the kitchen which discourages the men to even peep in the kitchen to see what is being done there. Harriet advised women to improve on the general hygiene in the kitchen to attract their husbands. She also requested the men to help their wives in preparation of food for the family as well as advise one another other than judging before discovering the root cause. Haruna Ngobi said that some women are very quarrelsome which at times discourages men from being at home or forces them to leave and think of getting other wives. Kibo staff encouraged them to always think of how to solve a problem other than running away from them Kibo staff then introduced the healthy and safe kitchen program and told them that the program will help the community to overcome all those challenges they have mentioned. She told them that for this program to be successful both men and women should work together because the problem faced affects both men , women and the children. The community was very excited about the program because it will help them solve the major cause of conflict or abuse in most families. They promised to attend all the lessons and invite more people to the next lessons.
