Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson the community is aware that having an Abortion is the same as killing someone and is illegal in Uganda unless for other reasons.
Notes
The community members came really late because they had received rains previously and so they were still in their gardens. Lorna moved around when she arrived the village mobilizing the community members to come to the meeting however, in most homes the community members were not there but in the gardens. When we started the meeting, we started with an opening prayer , opening remarks from the chairman which was then followed by a review of the previous lesson. After this we went straight to the topic of the day Abortion. Lorna mentioned that all these lessons follow each other early , pregnancies, early marriages , Abortion but the most thing is to Abstain from sex to avoid all the 3. Lornas Jed if Abortion was a new term and they mentioned NO. She asked who are the victims and they mentioned young girls and women and men shouted he the women. Lorna then asked are there cases in this village or neighboring villages and they mentioned yes. After this introduction Lorna asked them what are those crude methods they have heard people use. They mentioned a lot of tea leaves, sugar and salt, medications, surgery, certain local herbs and Lorna mentioned to them now for sure we all know what we are talking about. Lorna mentioned that in Uganda Abortion is illegal unless the girl or mothers life is in jeorpady. Lorna went ahead and mentioned that when we go to the Bible, Abortion is a sin because it falls under the commandment “ Do not kill”. We then looked at the causes /dangers of Abortion among which were; financial reasons where a girl, boy is unprepared to meet the costs that come with having a baby, Rape and Defilement being another cause, fear to drop out of school, parents being overly tough on their children, fear of peers, being judged by the community, spousal rejection, fear of parental rejection. Women added that men are not ashamed to have sex with their children or when a woman they married had children in her previous marriage, the men do not consider them their children and having tried to have children many times and nothing they end up with these their children and it becomes embarrassing that they tell them to Abort. On the dangers we looked at death, hemorrhage, barrenness, damage of the uterus, cancer regret among others. On the solutions we mentioned that men need to take responsibility of their actions, to the women to be faithful to their partners and tell them the truth instead of Aborting, the parents were urged to befriend their children and guide and counsel them. In addition to encourage their children to value themselves and Abstain from sex if they want to avoid such situations. Women were advised not to side with their children when it comes to when they get pregnant and that instead of making bad decisions like to Abort to involve the men as well so as they make well informed decisions. In conclusion Lorna mentioned Abortion is bad, illegal at least in Uganda and to let their children give birth. Isaa a drunkard encouraged parents to let their children give birth because it’s cheaper than after having an Abortion.

28848 This was during the lesson on Abortion and the argument was that men are the leading cause as to why women, girls abort. They are not faithful to their partners and when they realize they are in trouble getting someone else pregnant they tell them to Abort the pregnancy. The men mentioned that the woman should be blamed because why do they come to married men. It was such an argument but was great. The final point was got that Abortion is Bad.
