Healthy and Safe Kitchens
Notes
Harriet went to Kalalu village to guide participants to form policies that will Govern the healthy and safe kitchens program and introduce smearing. Unfortunately she reached in the village when it was raining so heavily and since the lesson takes place under a tree she had to wait in the car as participants were still taking shelter in their homes.waited for about about 1 hour for the rain to stop . Later own a few participants turned up for the meeting. The lesson was to target a big number of participants so that most people’s ideas about policy formation are taken into consideration. She decided to postpone the lesson and taught the few participants about smearing . During the lesson Harriet asked the participants to discuss the importance of smearing and they sighted the following, smearing makes the house to look neat, last longer and attractive to the men to help in cooking process. One participants called Lydia Namukuvu said that her kitchen is made out of bricks that she plans to plaster in future . She asked whether she can be exempted from smearing , she gets a stove as she looks for money to buy materials for plastering. Harriet told her that she can smear her kitchen , she gets a stove and in further when she gets materials for plastering she can remove the smeared dir and plaster. One of the participants Robinnah supported the idea that at times it might be hard for some one to get plastering materials therefore requested every one to smear his / her home facilities with dirt, ash and cow dung which are freely available in the community. Haruna asked Harriet to explain what she considers to be a good kitchen because for him he has a grass thatched house. Harriet told him that a good kitchen is the one which is well roofed, doesn’t leak, has a strong well, and good ventilation/ not dark inside. She added that good roofing doesn’t mean that the kitchen roof should be made out of iron sheets , it can be grass thatched provided it doesn’t leak. Harriet requested the men to improve on their home facilities that are lagging behind. She also thanked the participants for the active participation, asked them whether they know how to smear their home facilities or Kibo staff should come back and demonstrate on smearing. They said that majority know how to smear and they will work together to help those who do not know. .
