Notes
Harriet went to kamudoke village to follow up on smearing progress, kitchen safety and food handling safety. This was a surprise visit and her target area was the trading center. She walked through over 20 homes together with the chairperson of the healthy Ms. Rabbecca while checking on stove usage, general hygiene of the entire kitchen as well as smearing. Being a surprise visit she was able to find participants in their day to day life. Interestingly most homes were well smeared, most people were using their stoves on daily basis , in some homes she found food cooking by itself or being cooked by children as the rest of the family members were busy in the gardens. However in some 5 homes the kitchen were dirty/ not swept with dirty scattered utensils . Harriet talked to the children who were found at home to tell the parents as well as work with them to clean the kitchens on daily basis, always wash their utensils and put them on the dish racks to avoid flies which may cause diseases. After the home visit a meeting was held to discuss progress and the way forward. Harriet shared with about what she observed during the home to home visit and asked them to suggest possible solutions and these were: Also there was one participant who was cooking on her stove along side the traditional three stones fire and she gave the reason that her mother in law in law is an African traditional believer and her faith doesn’t allow her to eat fish or eat food cooked on the stove that has ever cooked fish there fore the three stones fire is used to cook fish in case they have too and it is not cooked daily therefore the fuel efficient stove is used daily. She asked the community to suggest a possible solution for that. The community agreed to build for her a second stove in her kitchen to take care of fish to avoid the traditional three stoves fire with their associated problems. Also the participants who had un tidy kitchens with dirty utensils scattered all over promised to improve. The participants in the trading center promised to follow up with each other for the sustainability of the healthy and safe kitchens program.
