- When Lorna arrived the village, there was a meeting taking place opposite where we meet for the Life Skills Program. The community members were discussing about an electricity supply problem where the chairman had failed to sign a letter addressed to the Chief Administrative Officer requesting for electrification in the village. The community members were not so happy. However after attempts of talking to him, he agreed to sign the document. After signing the document a group of 7 men left for the district to deliver the letter. The community had planned to beat up the chairman if he had insisted on not signing the letter. However it was good that they resolved the issue well. Lorna was able to read through the letter and it was well written. In the meeting however we looked at Abstinence and in this lesson , we look at the reasons young people say yes to sex and the reasons they should say No (Abstain). We started by reviewing the previous lesson causes and dangers of early marriages. However in today’s lesson, we discussed about Abstainence and we started with what are some of these reasons why young teens say yes to sex. Some of the reasons were; they say yes because they lack basic needs like knickers, sanitary towels, clothes, sometimes fees, another reason was curiosity they have heard about sex and want to try it out, parents sharing rooms with parents which may tempt the children to try these things, fear of loosing the relationship, need to excel at school and so they offer their bodies in exchange for good grades, influence of Alcohol among others . We then looked at the reasons for saying No like; fear of pregnancy, fear of STDs, fear of parents, fear of school dropout among others. After looking at some of these reasons, we looked at how to help children / teens Abstain from sex and among the reasons were; teens should know their value because when they know their value they will know what is right and wrong for them, parents need to keep counseling and talking to their children concerning sex and that no one should force them to have sex against their will since it’s a mutual consent. Girls should be firm and be Assertive say No and stick with their No, boys and girls can be friends minus sex, Advise the boy child to respect the girls and respect them enough not to disrespect their bodies. Stay away from strangers , say no to free gifts, keep children in school because school keeps them occupied, avoid bad peer groups. Among others. Lorna concluded by encouraging the community members not to be shy when it comes to talking to their children because if they leave them to fill the gaps , then there is definitely another group of people they are listening to.
