Learning Objectives
To educate participants to understand how women are more vulnerable to HIV.
Notes
Purpose of the visit to ikumbya village, Manuela went to this village to teach about women and HIV, this lessons is aimed at educating participants to know exact reasons why women are at higher risk of catching HIV virus than the men. Manuela reached the village found few members seated waiting for her, Manuela remembered that they have been encouraging participants to work on their home facilities because they were all broken down by rain and other calamities, Manuela asked the participants that, who among them have worked on their home facilities, the few who were around said yes, then Manuela told them let us go and inspect, they moved in several home and these participants have really worked on their home facilities and they are still working. After that exercise, Manuela and the team came back to the meeting place, Manuela appreciated the participants who worked on their home facilities, she encouraged them to continue, Manuela asked participants questions about the previous lesson, participants were able to share their ideas about the previous lessons, after that , Manuela introduced the lesson of the day, Manuela asked participants why do they say women and HIV, participants started grooming as they look at one another, after few minutes , one man, called Ivan said that because women are the most prostitute, another participant said because they pass HIV to their children etc. Manuela explained this lesson to the participants referring to the biological, social and cultural aspects that put the life of a mother at higher risk of catching the HIV virus, Manuela also told the participants that women are so vulnerable to HIV and they need to be educated about this lessons so that they can get knowledge and skills to keep them selves safe and their children. After that, Manuela asked the participants to explain how the biological, social and cultural behavior can put the life of a mother at risk of catching HIV virus, one woman called Florence said the practice of female genital meutulation by Sebeye women in kapchorowa can lead to higher risk of catching HIV virus because in most cases they only use one knife to cut all the mothers which is not right. Another participant also said the practice of some HIV positive men who think if they sleep with virgins girls that they will be cured of HIV, he said that can also put the life of the young girls at higher risk of catching HIV. After that brain storming, Manuela told the participants to continue searching for the answers and they will continue from there in the next visit since it was threatening to rain.
