Notes
Manuela and Lorna went to Mpumiro to continue with their lessons under HIV/AIDS Awareness. Being a rainy season, it’s challenging to get the community members to the meeting on time and even the attendance is tricky since they take long in the gardens thinking that it is still early only to realize time is far spent. As usual we started with an opening prayer , communications from the chairperson in the village and then Kibo staff. Manuela started off with the preview from the previous lesson where she asked the community members to remind us of the previous topic. The topic was on Cure and Treatment. Florence was able to tell the rest of the community members the definition of these two terms and where HIV/ AIDS falls under it terms of whether it has a cure or can be treated. After this we went ahead and looked at the Well-being sectors Manuela reviewed the sectors together with the community and Lorna was able to demonstrate the well-being sectors on the ground. The well-being sectors are ; physical well-being where a PLWHIV needs to do some physical activities in this case in the village it is digging, also eating a balanced diet, Spiritual well-being attending Church/ mosque , places of spiritual encouragement, Psychosocial well-being where we have counseling among others. The review went well. On the topic of today Women and HIV, Manuela and Lorna asked the community members to tell us where the relation between women and HIV is that is, what comes to their mind . Isabirye mentioned women are the highest Carrier of the virus because they are easily persuaded, Florence mentioned that women can have more than one man and no one can know and that how they spread the virus or are at most risk. Lorna mentioned that she heard from another village that women are easily lured by witch doctors into having sex with them or cutting them with unsterilised instruments taking advantage of them for a certain problem and without knowing they carry the virus into their homes. Lorna asked them whether this was true and both men and women said yes it was true. Manuela went on and mentioned that we have both biological and non biological reasons as to why women are at more risk of getting HIV than the men. She looked at biological first ; women were created differently from men in terms of their sexual reproductive organ which makes women receive larger fluids during intercourse, also that women are like a flower and are easily in contact with the body fluids more than men. Also practices like female genital mutilation practiced by some tribes lead to tear during intercourse why puts women at risk, young girls who have never engaged in sex relations risk tearing and damaging of their internal parts hence putting them at risk. The non biological factors were; women not given a chance to participate in their reproduction, taboo speaking about sex in women , virgins can cure sex, extreme poverty that encourages women to exchange sex for money, marriage rites that gives women as property among others. The lesson went well and the community members who participated most were given props to encourage others to do the same in the next meeting. We will continue with this lesson and introduce a new one in the next meeting.
