Notes
On arrival in the village, Lorna moved home to home mobilizing the community members and also checking on other Kibo programs sustainability. In most of the homes there was children and elderly as most of the people were still in their gardens having received a downpour. After moving around to about 10 homes, Lorna came back to the meeting place. At the meeting place Wilber informed Lorna that there were some members who had another meeting at the church which collided with today’s meeting and so they would not be able to join us. He apologized also that it’s a rainy season and community members are busy in their gardens. He asked Lorna to not get tired but go ahead and teach those who come. He went ahead and opened with a word of prayer thanking those who came to the meeting and encouraged everyone to pay attention and participate. Lorna then took over and greeted the community members and told them she was not happy about their attendance and asked whether community members had forgotten about this day and they said no it’s just the season. Lorna encouraged them to dig early and attend the meeting on time on Wednesday’s. We started by reviewing the previous lesson on Adolescence and puberty stage and there after introduced the topic of the day Rape and Defilement . Lorna asked what is rape and mama Soci said it’s having sex with someone against their will. Godi said it’s kissing someone forcefully which made everyone laugh. Lorna told Godi that , that one can lead to rape. We then looked at what the law says in Uganda about rape that one is liable to 14 years in jail or life depending if this person was positive with HIV. We then looked at the different types of rape among which were; marital rape where Lorna asked is there such a thing as Marital rape? Women said yes that the men go ahead and have sex with them against their will. Again Godi said those women don’t know what they want they will never speak up but expect you to read their body language and so if they as men read their body language, they go ahead and have sex with them. It’s interesting the women shyed away as one Marion mentioned that women are like babies they need the men to read their bodies for them. Lorna mentioned here is where we find a problem if the mothers are acting like this, how do they expect their children to act when they can’t say yes or No to sex. Mwase mentioned that we are joking about this thing but it is true rape exists in marriages but he told the women and men that when one gets married, what is their role to give each other their bodies and so if the women refuses what is the man to do? To talk to their partner which unfortunately some don’t and end up having a very unhappy marriage . He went ahead and mentioned that the women lie to their men that they are sick and yet they are not forcing some men to rape their women. He encouraged the women to be open. He however mentioned that women should always speak up when this happens. Lorna mentioned sex is consented by 2 parties if one hasn’t consented but one goes ahead and has intercourse with them whether forcefully or through coercion, it is rape. We then looked at age related rape, incest sex between relatives as other types of Rape. We concluded by looking at the causes of rape among which were; Influence of Alcohol and drugs, bad peer groups, Idleness and unemployment, lust, injustices , and one person mentioned indecent dressing among our children. Here Lorna mentioned as much as that could be true, the victim of rape is never the responsible person for them being raped it is always the perpetrator.Hajji advised the women to encourage their children not to visit boys places alone but go in groups , reject free gifts among others. We will continue from here on the next visit.
