Notes
Suzan, Tape and Torrey went to mpumiro village to teach and guide the community how to build a fuel efficient stove. It was Torrey’s first time to visit the village because she wanted to see how a fuel efficient stove is constructed. When they arrived there, they were welcomed by the community members who were already gathered at the meeting place with the L.C.1 chairperson. Together they first walked to the borehole which was constructed by Kibo group and found that it was neatly maintained with clean surroundings, after they went and visited a few homes which had received the improved stoves and were cooking on them. They found some members cooking food on their stoves in clean kitchens which were also smeared with mud both from the inside and outside parts of the walls. Other homes had all the facilities well maintained such as the shower areas, latrines, hand washing stations and dish racks while others need to be improved and repaired. Later on they walked back to the home where the stove building lessons was going to be conducted and found that more participants had turned up and busy arranging the materials. They picked up baskets and basins and began fetching dirt together from the anthill at a nearby bush while taking it outside the kitchen. Each person participated in the collecting of the dirt which was mixed with the grass at a ratio of 2:1. After pouring enough water all over it, they began stamping the dirt while singing songs of encouragement which attracted more members around the community. When the dirt got ready, it was carried inside the kitchen in small molded balls and a few active group members together with Kibo staff began building the stove while others stayed aside watching. Kibo staff members kept on correcting some mistakes they made while explaining to the community how its supposed to be. In the end, one stove was successfully constructed in Hadija’s kitchen and Kibo staff encouraged all the members to improve on all their facilities especially smearing their buildings with mud. The community thanked Kibo for the lessons taught and promised to improve on their facilities.
