Notes
On arrival to the village, Manuela, Lorna and Kyle were welcomed by songs and dances as we headed to the meeting area. At the meeting area, we had a brief meeting before we set off home to home checking on other Kibo programs. We were able to see stoves, latrines, shower areas, tippy taps and even some Mvule trees and goats. The community members were excited and even went ahead to lead us into their homes even up to their bedrooms, their floors were well smeared and others even cemented. We also were able to see the borehole where we found it in good condition but advised on keeping the disk put clean. After here we went back to the meeting place and there we continued with our lesson. At the meeting place, the Agenda was read where we started by introducing ourselves starting with the local counsel chairman3 , then Kibo staff and Kyle introduced himself as well. The chairman thanked Kibo for the work it’s doing in this village and mentioned that Ikumbya is known for having the best hygiene in the sub county . He also mentioned Incase we have another opportunity to consider the school for a borehole since they find it hard for the children to cross the busy roads and also miss out on school while going to fetch water in the community. He welcomed us and told us to feel at home. Lorna then did a review of the previous lesson which was on women and HIV/AIDS. Lorna started by again mentioning that this lesson is not targeting anyone HIV positive but it’s general sensitization. On the review the community members had forgotten so we reminded ourselves and Lorna encouraged the men to always carry out the HIV test because in most cases the women are tested during antenatal visits. Lorna also encouraged women to give birth in the hospitals and be faithful and the young ones to Abstain. She encouraged women to work hard and not be lured into sex because of poverty and also to speak up when it comes to sex. Manuela then taught the lesson of today which was HIV and behavior change. She had given this topic previously as homework. She mentioned that being HIV positive requires a change of lifestyle and behavior. For example one does not need to keep sleeping around without protection as they may infect themselves with the virus again. She mentioned that they need to encourage themselves and avoid a state of loneliness and discouraged the community from Stigma. She asked the community to give her some answers and they mentioned; to keep themselves fit and active, eat a balanced diet, go for routine checkups, remain faithful to their partners, among others. Kyle also encouraged the community members to observe the A,B ,Cs that is ; Abstain from sex, Be faithful and use condoms. Together we can all stay safe and healthy.
