Healthy and Safe Kitchens
Notes
Harriet went to Kamudoke village to follow up on firewood storage stands construction, kitchen safety and food handling safety. This time she focused on the lower section of the village. She met the chairperson for the healthy and safe kitchens program Ms Harriet who volunteered to walk with her through the homes of the participants. The good news was most participants were cooking on their stoves on daily basis this was evidenced by the absence of the traditional three stones open flames in the kitchens, food cooking by itself or being attended by children. Most kitchens were swept, well arranged and the participants had washed their utensils and put them on the dish racks to dry. Most participants had firewood storage stands, some had stocked them with firewood and those ones that were not stocked with firewood were encouraged to stock them with wood that they will use during scarcity. The program leaders said that most people have got stoves (100 stoves) also some participants who did not have kitchens before were able to build kitchens to get stoves that has enabled them to cook comfortably with limited cases of fire accidents. They also said that they now use less firewood to cook and also with the firewood storage stands which has enabled them always to have firewood to use to cook even during the rainy season. Harriet encouraged them to maintain all their home facilities and they promised to do so.
