Notes
Maria visited Nawampiti village lower section, to teach about pneumonia and diarrhea, signs and symptoms, mode of spread, prevention, and treatment. The meeting started by defining pneumonia, members gave different definitions saying it is the cough that attacks children, it is when a child gets cough with whooping Annet said, after the health educator defined pneumonia as an infection that inflames the lungs and the air sacs which is caused by a bacteria. Community members together with the staff discussed the signs of pneumonia; cough, loss of appetite, sweating among others and the staff encouraged members to go to hospital as soon as they see any sign, make sure your child is fully immunized. Furthermore diarrhea was discussed it’s risk factors, signs and symptoms, how to prevent and treat it. Maria asked members how they treat diarrhea locally and Rose said that before she takes a sick child to hospital, she first give raw milk, herbs, silver fish etc. Men and women gave several signs and symptoms, Maria emphasized on the risk signs like bloody feces, dehydration, general body weakness etc as being so dangerous. Members were encouraged to go to hospital for better management, improve on their hygiene. Maria advised members to give oral rehydration salt (ORS) to prevent that person from becoming dehydration. She then taught community members how to mix or make local ORS using salt, sugar and water.
