To create awareness among community members
Notes
Introduction Manuela, Lorna and the four students went to Nawiabete village, to teach community members about how HIV is transmitted from one person to another. HIV is a very deadly diseases that has no cure, this is why people need to be taught how it can be passed from one person to another. The lesson was aimed to create awareness among the community members so that they can attain the knowledge on how they can deal with such situations in the their lives or in the community. Objective By the end this lesson , Manuela expects community members to be able to know how HIV is transmitted from one person to another. By the end of this lesson, Manuela expects community members to be able to know the dangers of sharing sharp instruments that can lead to the transmission of HIV from one person to another. Overview When Manuela and the team arrived in the community they found when community members are just coming back home from their garden and others were preparing to come for the Life Skills lesson. Manuela and Lorna led the visitors as they moved around visiting homes and inspecting home facilities, after that they came back to their meeting point and settled. Manuela started by introducing the visitors to the community members, she also introduced the community leader to the visitors before she can start teaching the lessons, Manuela started her lesson with some activities of shaking hands as a way HIV is transmitted from one person to another, she called for two volunteers to stand up and shake hands with four people, then the four members to also shake hands with more four members and it went on like that showing how HIV can be transmitted very first. After that activities, Manuela asked community members that, what was the meaning of that activity, community members could not tell because they don’t know what was happening since Manuela did not tell them in the beginning of the lesson, so Manuela told them what it’s means and they were so surprised. Then she went on teaching different ways on how HIV can be passed from one person to another person, while she was teaching, she also demonstrated the dangers of sharing sharp instruments so that community members can understand because some members don’t believe in that, but through seeing they will understand more. During this lesson Manuela kept on teaching while asking the community members questions and they were able to share their views which made the class to be too interactive and interesting. After finish teaching, Manuela asked the community members what will be their way forward since they have now learnt this lesson, members promised to change their ways of living and they requested if possible they want to carry out an HIV test so that they get to know their status. Manuela also gave chance to Lorna to evaluate the community members about what they have just learnt, this went on well and also the visitors had a good time to encourage the community members, they told them to continue coming for the meetings to learn more of Life Skills.
