Notes
Tom and the students made a visit to kalitumba Village for a follow up on sanitation and hygiene improvements as well as showing the students Kibo work in the village. On, arrival they were joined by the chairman of the village as well as the committee members. They started moving from the chairman’s place towards the former MP’s place. As they moved around, they were joined by many children from the village who were excited to see the visitors. Together they moved around encouraging residents about their facilities. In many homes they found new pits while in some homes the pits where done and in others, the latrines were under construction. In the homes where they found the pits, Tom and the committee members encouraged and guided the residents on how to better dig and construct the latrines. Three homes, they found when the latrines where under construction. Tom and the committee members thanked them for their efforts towards improving on their sanitation and hygiene. One resident aged about 55 years has finished his latrine. He was very thankful for kibo for the encouragement while in four other homes, the residents have finished constructing the concrete walls before starting the digging. One of them has finished his pit and is about 30ft deep. He said he wants to construct it with cement and concrete. His neighbour across the road has also started on constructing the kitchen and the latrine. In one home, they met a resident who does not have a latrine. Tom asked the children to ask him for his latrine and he answered by saying he did not have one. Tom asked him to apologize to the children and promised them that he would be starting on the digging soon. The resident’s name was “Van” and he said he was going to start soon. The children also asked Van when he would construct his latrine and he asked for 1 week. The children asked that if they found when he has not dug one, what should they do to him? or what should Tom do? Van said any punishment. After they moved in several other homes in which they saw new dish racks, rubbish pits and shower facilities under construction. Another highlight of the day for the committee members was finding Mr Kange when he had finished digging the rubbish pit and was at a depth of 8ft of the latrine pit. The committee members were very thankful and wondered because they never believed that Kange would ever construct any facility. They thanked Kibo for the work because now they can see that finally, they can achieve their goal of open defecation free status after seeing people like mr Kange also working. Tom also thanked them for their commitment and efforts towards encouraging and sensitising the community.
