Notes
This day was to officially commission the borehole so that the community can start to use it. On this day, the community members come together and hear from the different people coming from the government wing and other Kibo staff. In Buyange, we had the district water engineer, the chairman LC 3, the community development officer, the sub county speaker and a representative from JICA, a Japan organization working in the field of water and sanitation. The chairman of the village first thanked Kibo for helping his village residents know the values of proper hygiene and sanitation. He testified that before Kibo came in Buyange, many people didn’t know why it was important to have a proper pit latrine and other hygiene facilities and on top of that the community didn’t expect that at one time they would get a new borehole because for a very long time the people in the lower part of the community have been getting water from an open pond which is contaminated with running water that end up in this pond. The district water officer asked the community to take good care of their borehole making sure that they always contribute money towards the borehole repair and maintenance account. They made their by laws and therefore they must follow them to help them take good care of the borehole. He also called on every body to equally be responsible and not think its for the water user committee alone. Henry also talked to the community members and thanked them for working with all the Kibo staff and to keep doing good and keep all what they are doing for their own good. He also told the community to keep welcoming more Kibo staff members that will come to work with them. Enock reminded them of their bad state that the village was found before Kibo started working in Buyange. The village sanitation status stood at about 30% latrine coverage and now in their upper 90’s. He told the community members that have not yet constructed on their new pits to do so as soon as possible and that, Kibo will continue to monitor all the current programs in Buyange and if anything has changed, the community was reminded that the borehole would be closed. However all the community members were happy to start using their new borehole from Kibo and the government officials, LC3 and district water officer thanked Kibo for the big support in the district.
