Notes
Tom made a visit to kalitumba village to check on sanitation and hygiene improvements as well as checking on facility constructions and improvements. The journey to the village was not so smooth as he first got stuck on the road because of bad road conditions but after about an hour, he finally made it to the village where he found when vhts were waiting for him at the chairman’s place. They were 4 vhts who were waiting for him. On his arrival, they started by a short meeting discussing about how the work is going in the village. The vhts suggested that the work is going well and most of the residents are embracing the program by constructing good facilities. They only raised one concern about the heavy rains in the village that are making it a challenge for other residents to dig the pits as most pits get filled up with water. They therefore have to first wait for the water to dry and drain before they continue with the digging of the pit. After the meeting they all suggested that they move in some specific homes to check on the progress they have made towards finishing their facilities. They started in one of the vhts homes and it was good to find that her husband has progressed towards his latrine construction. He remains with only a small section of the wall of the latrine. Also they visited the home of the vhts neighbour who they found when he had finished constructing the concrete floor for his latrine. He said he is waiting to sell his Gnuts so that he gets money for cement and more bricks before the construction of the wall starts. They thanked him for the work he has done and encouraged him to construct it well after sharing with him about some ideas on latrine construction. After they also moved in other homes where they found pits still being dug while in another home, they found when the builders were working on a resident’s latrine. Together with the vhts, Tom thanked the resident for sacrificing to construct such a permanent latrine. He encouraged him by saying that even though it is costly, it is worth it because it’s an investment for his family but above all, one of the most important facilities for a home. The resident also thanked the vhts and kibo for teaching and encouraging them towards improving on their sanitation and hygiene. He said if it was not for kibo, he was so reluctant and he said he never thought that in his life he would ever construct such a latrine. He after said he will do the same by constructing a new kitchen for his wife as well as a new shower facility and improve on the old dish rack. After this home visit, Tom and the vhts visited other homes and they were all inspired by the commitment and work of the residents.
