- Harriet had planned to introduce the Healthy and Safe kitchen program to the community.
They went through the Ivukula sub County to pick up the Community Development officer who was to introduce Harriet to community. When they reached in the village they first worked through the homes and found that all the homes cook on open flames.
They also came a cross a home where children were cooking by themselves on open flames which was most hazardous to their lives.
This was intended to create trust for Harriet in the community also to led the Government to know what Kibo is doing in their village. The CDO thanked the Community for having turned up for the meeting and he also encouraged them to be active.
Harriet begun by who is responsible for cooking food for the family. They said that by culture it’s the women’s responsibility to cook food.
She also asked them to identify the challenges they go through while cooking food for the family and they cited the following:
To much smoke in the kitchen which has caused may women to develop eye diseases and chest pain. They said that the reasons why women are the majority is because they spend long hours in the kitchen cooking food for the family in a Smokey environment.
They also said also some women and children have experienced fire accidents as a result of open flames since women are the ones who cook food and at times helped by their girls children.
They also said that at times food takes long to get ready to to lack of fire wood because they don’t own individual forests where they can pick firewood every day.
One woman said that even when children gets burnt the women take the blame and they are responsible for taking children to the hospitals and nurse them there.
Namukobe said that some women are times beaten Incase children gets burnt in a home.
Harriet asked the men whether they have ever thought about the cause of such cases before they beat or blame their wives.
Some men said that some women are careless that’s why children gets burnt. She also told them that women do a lot of work at home whereby they at times become tired and too busy which forces them to ask the children to help.
Harriet told them that Kibo intends to teach them how to build fuel efficient stoves to eliminate all those challenges.
The community was very interested and the men also promised to participate in the program.
