- Harriet had planned to introduce Healthy and Safe Kitchen program. She was to teach them the goals and objectives/benefits of the fuel efficient stoves. She did not find any one at the meeting place.she waited for 30 minuets and later some people started coming. Harriet thanked the participants for having sacrificed their time to come for the meeting. She asked participants to identify the challenges they go through while cooking. One of the men suggested the women should answer this question. Harriet guided the discussion and encouraged both men and women to give their views because the teaching is community centered therefore both men and women should participate. One man called Kairu Farouk said that women suffer with smoke in the kitchen which at times lead the women to develop running nose and tears through their eyes. He said that for him he experienced it when his wife lost his mother and went for the funeral. He said that he could not wait for his wife to spend four days a way from home because it required him to cook food for the children in that Smokey environment.He had to call his wife to come back home and cook for the family. Naigaga Salumin said that most women spend long hours in the forests looking for firewood and at times when they come back home their husbands beat them thinking that they have been having sexual affairs with other men. Other people said that in this community most women steal firewood because it is their responsibility to find firewood for cooking no matter how tough it is.They added that some men even when they come across firewood they don’t even bring it home to assist his wife. Harriet told them Kibo’s intentions is to work with them as a community and teach them how to build fuel efficient stoves which will save firewood, vent out smoke,eliminate cases of fire accidents, cook food fast as well as provide time for the woman to do other productive activities. She encouraged men also to participate so that the health and safety of the people in the home to be improved. One members asked that for her she doesn’t have a kitchen but she always cooks her food in the verandah of her house, will Kibo build for her a stove too. Harriet said that the main goal is to empower them with a skill and promote team work through active participation. She therefore encouraged this woman to stay working with the group as well as improve/ build her kitchen and when she finishes the group will come and build for her a stove since she has been working with them in the group. Harriet concluded by telling the group to mobilize each other for the next meeting . The group promised to mobilize others and agreed to have the next meeting on Monday 20th August 2018. The community was very thankful and promised to mobilize more people to participate.
