Notes
Introduction Lorna went to this community to introduce the topic HIV/AIDS. To also talk about the facts and myths on HIV/AIDS. Overview When Lorna arrived the village, she went to the meeting place and waited for a few minutes before the chairman came and told her that the meeting place had changed and that if she wanted people to attend the meeting, we had to go to the trading center. At the trading center people were going about their business although , at the meeting place were 4 men. We waited for about 30 mins and then one of the youth got up and decided to drum to inform the community of what was happening in the village. It was quite fun watching him drum as he kept moving from one place to another in the trading center alerting the members. The number of men that turned up was mostly youth which was good as this topic is very important for this age bracket. After about an hour of waiting, Lorna started the meeting by introducing herself and her role in Kibo group. She told them she would be teaching life skills and gave them a summary of what the program was all about. Lorna then introduced the topic of the day which was HIV transmission and facts and myths about this disease. Lorna asked if anyone had an idea of how this disease is transmitted and they mentioned; through sexual intercourse with an infected person, sharing sharp instruments with an infected person and also in times of accidents if someone has a cut and gets in contact with someone who is having this disease, they are also in danger of getting infected. Lorna then thanked them for the answers and added other ways like through child birth, through breast milk. She added that HIV/AIDS moves through fluids which she mentioned were; blood, vaginal fluids, rectal fluids and breast milk but not saliva as many thought. She also mentioned the sharp instruments that transmit this disease as not limited to syringes, needles, safety pins but also hair clippers and when she mentioned this community members nodded and said they had never thought through it. They asked Lorna what they should do , whether to avoid trimming their hair or what?. Lorna encouraged them to ask the barbers to put spirit on the machines or sterilise them before and after use. They asked Lorna why doesn’t electricity shock or kill the virus?. Lorna said it has not yet been found anywhere that electricity kills the virus but sterilising these instruments was the best way. Another question asked was can one have a partner who is negative when one is positive?. Lorna said yes. They continued and asked is it possible for them to have an HIV negative child. Lorna said yes and added that the positive person is required to take their drugs(ARVS) effectively without missing a day or time. She added that it also depends on the viral load of the person. Viral load is the amount of HIV found in the body and therefore when it is high, it is not advisable to engage in any sexual activity, however when it is low or untraceable, one is given a drug and then one can go ahead depending on the council from the medical person. She advised the positive person to also protect themselves so as not to acquire any other sexually transmitted diseases. Conclusion The meeting was mostly full of men which was great but Lorna encouraged them to invite their wives and more women to attend the meeting next time.Lorna concluded by thanking them for their time and asked that next time when called upon, to please turn up to the meeting and also encourage their friends to also turn up. The next lesson will be a more practical approach to HIV/ AIDS transmission.
