- Tom and Nate made a visit to kalitumba village to conduct triggering in hand washing. When they arrived in the village, they first met at the vhts place before moving around mobilizing the community. After Tom finding out that the vht was not around, he decided to move around and visit the treasurers home as well as other vhts. They mobilized them and later came to the meeting place where they found the place arranged and prepared. They sat and waited for residents to arrive while discussing and sharing with those that had already arrived. Tom shared with them about the values of hand washing as well as living in a hygienic environment. After the arrival of residents, Tom requested for the meeting to start. The chairman of the village opened the meeting with some good opening remarks about kibo and its work in the village to improve sanitation standards and appreciating it for its continued involvement in the village. He encouraged the residents to learn and implement what they have learnt and asked one resident to pray for the meeting. After the prayer, Tom was requested to take over. Tom started off by talking about hands, the advantages and uses of hands as well maintaining the hands clean. This was more participatory. Residents were offering answers. Tom also asked for some volunteers to come so that they could help in the demonstration. Tom also asked the residents if there hands were clean. A few residents raised there hands saying they had clean hands. Tom requested them to come in front and wash there hands. When they did wash there hands using soap, the water turned to brown. Tom got it and poured it into a transparent plastic bag. He asked what they saw and they all said it was dirty water showing that the resident’s hands were dirty. Tom also demonstrated using charcoal dust as well as while posh on which they all washed there hands without soap and later touched the while posh. Black marks could be seen on the posho showing that there hands were dirty. Tom also guided the community to relate hand washing to open defecation through a discussion about cleaning them selves or wiping children using local materials without soap. Residents realized that they do touch and still carry as well as eat feces when they don’t wash there hands with soap and water. There was also the shit and shake demonstration as well as shit and eat demonstration. These demonstrations moved the community to realize that there is a great need to wash there hands no only with water but with soap as well. Tom later took the attendance and gave out jerrycans to those that attended. He also gave them a gauze line for putting up the jerrycan. He encouraged them to construct good and durable tippy-taps by being creative and innovative. After Nate thanked the residents for coming and after Tom and Nate left for jinja.
