Notes
Harriet and Lorna made a surprise visit to Kitukiro village. The goal was to assess the level of sustainability of the Healthy and Safe kitchen program as well as the usage of stoves. When they got in the village they walked home to home while inspecting on the usage of stoves. Most people were shocked by their surprise visits and asked Harriet why sh did not call them. Harriet told them that she wanted to find them in their day to day life other than preparing themselves for her. Kibo staff observed most people cooking on the stoves and this was evidenced by the absence of three stones in the kitchens. In some homes they found food cooking by itself. They also found one stove which was poorly made by the community. When the community took out banana stems they did not enlarge the hole for putting firewood which left it narrow and therefore was not lighting well. Harriet explained the mistake to the owner and corrected it. Also three members ms Naigaga ,Kadija Mr. Mukembo who did not have kitchens before were able to build kitchens and finally got stoves. The community told Kibo staff that the stoves have helped them to save firewood ,reduce the cases of fire accidents as well as smoke with its effects, provided them with time to do other activities and also attend the Healthy and spiritual empowerment lessons since they don’t have to stay in the kitchen as they cook. One man called Mukembo told Kibo staff that the program have helped a skill to gain a skill of building stoves and attracted men to help their wives to cook food. He said this referring to himself that even his wife is not around he can enter in the kitchen and cook food with out any worry since he is able to cook two things at ago, use less fire wood with no smoke. He added that he can even set food on fire and go to look after his goats and by the time he comes back food will be ready. The community was very proud of Kibo programs and said that Kibo has taught them about forgiving one another through the Bible stories of God’s forgiveness ( the lost son )which were taught by Kibo staff.
