Tom, Alex and Nate made a visit to igerera B and when they reached, they found when some of the village leaders and the Village residents had gathered at the meeting place and the entertainment group was entertaining of them with songs and drama. Tom and Alex encouraged the Group to continue moving around while singing and drumming so that residence can come for the meeting. Because of Time, Alex and Tom and some VHT‘s decided to move around the village to collect some fecal matter. They moved in just four homes all near each other and none of the homes had a latrine. They collected all they needed and moved back to the meeting place and found when more residents had turned up. Because it was threatening to rain, Tom asked the chairman of the village to open the meeting with some remarks and after Kibo staff introduced themselves and the session started. Before Alex and Tom could go any further with the triggering session, it started raining. Tom encouraged the residents to take shelter in the nearby home and after come back to the meeting place while kibo staff members took shelter in the car. After about 20mins, the rains stopped and the residents came back to the meeting place. Tom took them through the session of village mapping which they enjoyed. After that session Tom took them through another session of food and fecal matter showing how feces move as well as talking about how the residents eat/ingest feces. The residents participated actively in the discussion about these issues. Tom also took them through a session of identifying diseases related to eating or ingesting feces and the dangers of defecating in the open hence open defecation. Tom also took them through the session of medical expense calculations and funeral calculations. This touched many residents and many were saying death should not happen due to lack of a latrine. As they continued with the triggering session, they were joined by the District Police Commander and other police officials. They came after Tom inviting them to participate in the triggering session of the village. They were also given time to speak to the residents. The DPC also spoke about the dangers of Open Defecation but also the legal implications of Open Defecation. He read from the Ugandan constitution and the penal code where the residents realized that carrying out Open Defecation and endangering the lives of there residents is a crime by law and has a penalty of not exceeding 7 years. Many residents did not know that open defecation is a crime. He also encouraged them about other issues and discouraged them from many criminal activities such as domestic violence and many more. He encouraged them to work with kibo to improve their sanitation and hygiene as it’s the only means through which they will get out of poverty. He also guided the community through the session of setting the completion date for the sanitation and hygiene program after which he will come back and inspect the village. One police officer encouraged the residents to form groups so that they dig a latrine pit every two days for each group members until all those without latrines are done. The residents appreciated the idea. The residents by they urge and encouragement from the police officers set their deadlines to the 05th of December. They chairman of the village thanked the residents for attending and encouraged them to improve on their sanitation and hygiene standards. The DPC together with Kibo staff commissioned the program by giving the village pick axes and shovels in support to the program. Because of rain, kibo staff members left for jinja.
