Notes
This meeting was about to guide the upper side of the community members as they enact their borehole bylaws and selecting their water user committee members for the old borehole in the community. The old borehole was having only two women acting as the committee members and the borehole was in such a bad status. The borehole needed a new head assembly and only these two ladies managed to move around the village fundraising money to buy a new head assembly. They asked Alex and Kibo to intervene in and help the situation on this borehole to be in the same status like the new one drilled by Kibo group. This is very important since both boreholes have to remain working to reduce the population on one borehole.
The community came together and Alex guided them to select a new water user committee for the new borehole. They selected a new committee being headed by a woman called Jowelia. All the key positions were occupied by women, like the chairperson, treasurer, Secretary and the care taker. The community also managed to form borehole bylaws to help them take good care of their borehole. Alex also guided them to come up with these bylaws and together they agreed on 10 bylaws that they all came up with. Alex then had to have a discussion with the new committee telling their respective roles and responsibilities that each has to offer. He also asked them to be active at all times and encouraged them to be responsible and called on all the water users to be responsible and contribute money towards their future borehole repair and maintenance. Amongst the bylaws that were formed was that each household to contribute 1000/= each month for the borehole future repair and maintenance. Alex explained to the community members why it was very important to contribute money and telling all the people to stop the notion of saying that borehole water is free and yet when boreholes break down , they cost money to fix them. This is supposed to a community responsibility to fix them and not think that Kibo or any other organization will fix it for them,This is when we ensure borehole sustainability. Now both boreholes in the community have got an active water committees in place who know exactly what to do.
