Notes
Today Enock and Martin went to this village to check on the people who promised to complete their latrines and other facilities. The first met with the VHTs and Chairperson of this village to decide which particular section needs more encouragements, sensitization, monitoring , assessments and evaluation of their facilities and homes in general. They all decided to go to the lower section where the most of the people in that area where digging their new latrines, working on their dish racks, shower areas and rubbish pits. As we walked towards those homes, we saw some new latrines in the trading centre constructed with bricks, cement and sand as well as some new shower areas. We encouraged them to maintain the facilities well by using ash in their latrines to chase flies out which always move germs from latrines to food. We taught them how germs cause several diseases due to open defection say diarrhea, dysentery, trachoma, cholera which may even lead to loss of lives in the community. There are some homes which have really worked so hard and they have invested in a lot of their resources to construct permanent latrines with gravel well mixed, proper foundation before they construct brick walls with cement. When we reached in the lower section, we met with one gentleman who was on our list of not having a latrines, the good news we found him when he has completed digging his latrine of about 15 ft deep. Although he was planning to start constructing on his latrine, he also built his new dish racks. There is also one old guy who for so long his family never had a proper latrine and never attempted to even dig and construct one. The neighboring residents came to us and confessed how they are so happy for that family to have a latrine and also said it’s been 20 years since that family had a functioning latrine. They thanked us for coming to this village and teaching them the importance and benefits of having proper sanitation and hygiene in their community. Most of the families whose names reflected in the evaluation survey that they didn’t have latrines are working on them. After the survey we got the names and started focusing on those homes which were lagging behind so that we can bring them up to speed.
