Notes
Borehole commissioning day is all about celebrating a big milestone in the village having successfully completed the water sanitation and hygiene program. Everyone in the village at this point understands why it’s important to have a clean home having all the required sanitation facilities in place. On top of that, if there is a stress for clean water, the village gets a borehole from Kibo. Nawandyo B successfully participated in cleaning their homes and community at large, Kibo group drilled a borehole and this day was to officially commission the new borehole for the community to start using. It’s entirely organized by the community members themselves. Enock worked with closely with this village most of the time encouraging them to have all the sanitation facilities moving together with the sanitation committee members. The village worked very hard and every household has a got a pit latrine and no more open defecation. Enock reminded the community members how far they had come from and asked them if any one would wish to go back defecating in the open as it used to be with some people and everybody said that they would never go back to those old days since each person understands the importance of having a clean home and village. Enock encouraged the community to keep maintaining their sanitation facilities and they shouldn’t expect that Kibo group would come back to do the same in their village. Kibo group promotes sustainability and every body should play a big part to ensure that everyone keeps a clean home. He told them that Kibo group would not be happy if the village forgot to maintain the good sanitation standards and go back to the old style of doing things. Alex also encouraged the village members never to forget why they had to spend over two years going through the sanitation program with Kibo group and if that happens Kibo group would not be happy but will have one choice to close the borehole as well. He continued to encourage them to observe and respect their borehole bylaws to help take good care of their borehole. He asked the community members to welcome other Kibo group staff members equally as they have always done if they really want to continue partnering with Kibo to work in their village. Another Kibo program will come in their village and everyone is called upon to respond positively. The water user committee members were reminded to be active and functioning at all times. The government officials led by the Assistant District water officer appreciated Kibo group for the support in the district and the water sector. They also asked the community to own the borehole and always contribute money for the borehole future repairs. Also the district water officer asked them to maintain a safe water chain in their village since everyone understands the importance of having a clean home. Therefore water should be got from a clean borehole using a clean water container and get to a clean home with all the required sanitation facilities and that’s when we shall ensure a clean and safe village fit for everyone to live in.
