- Notes
- Harriet found a few participants at the meeting place. She waited for few minutes others gathered. They walked to the home where the demonstration of removing banana stems was to be carried out.
The owner of the stove Betty Gusino had smeared the kitchen and and covered the banana stem that was put in the hole that vents out smoke.
Harriet warned the group never to block the holes on the stoves on the banana stems for the case of incomplete stoves. She told them that all the holes put on the stove are useful therefore it is not wise to block them.
She told them that the stove has five holes where by one it’s where the big saucepan sits while cooking, another one it’s between the big source pan and the small saucepan and its work is to move fire from the big pot to the small pot, the third one it is for venting out smoke, the forth one is for firewood while the fifth one is for oxygen that will always light fire by itself. She told them that all these holes are created using banana stems because they are easy to remove.
Harriet removed banana stems as she explained the whole process to the group. When the community saw a complete stove they were excited and thanked Kibo for empowering them with a skill.
One of the group members Matilda asked whether a tree stem can perform the same function as banana stems. Harriet told the community that trees are not good to use to create holes on the stove because they are hard to remove unlike the banana stems.
She told the group to continue cutting grass that will be used for building stoves and encouraged them to learn how to build stoves so that they are able to build many stoves on their own other than always waiting for Kibo to come and build for them stoves. She also told them that once they master the skill they can use it to earn a living because they can build stoves for money.
